Cornish Festivals and Holidays

Aside from the breathtaking scenery, lush beaches, and captivating wildlife, what makes the region of Cornwall stand-out is its rich culture and history. The locals have also maintained ways to preserve these particular essentials through various celebrations. Some of these occasions date back to ancient times with the traditions more or less still the same. Citizens of this region go all the way when preparing for these events, from the costumes to the lively music. With that said, here are some of the festivals that you should not miss if you happen to be in this side of the globe:

1. Allentide

This is the Cornish version of Halloween and is usually associated with one of the patron saints of the district, St. Allan. One of the practices for this holiday includes the lighting of Tindle Fires and handing out “Allan” apples to family members for good luck. This is usually held during the 31st of October in the district of Penzance.

2. Golowan

Spectacular fireworks, grand parades, and the procession of Penglaz the Obby Oss is just one of the main attractions for this event. Some of the significant figures commemorated on this weeklong celebration are St. Just of Penwith and St. Peter (as a major influence among fisherfolk) on the 23rd to 28th of June.

3. Furry Dance

This is considered one of the oldest British customs to date and is usually in the quaint village of Helston. This promenade is participated by people of all ages with the Town Band supplying the music for the dances. Early settlers organised this tradition to say goodbye to winter and welcome the abundance spring brings. Performers adorn their costumes with “Lily of the Valley”, the village’s official flower.
